to buy a fridge .. women's underwear and a Darth Vader voice distorter.

The 47-year-old former minister in the Country Liberal Party government had 14 days

FED:Australia should save commodity gains: IMF

Eds: This story is not for publication until 1600 AEST Thursday, April 28

By Colin Brinsden, AAP Economics Correspondent

CANBERRA, April 28 AAP - The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has again signalled
the federal government should consider saving the revenue boost from higher commodity
prices in a sovereign wealth fund.

The IMF, in its Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and the Pacific released on Thursday,
says that for economies benefiting from higher commodity prices, such Australia and New
Zealand, some of the boost to government revenues could be saved.

"(This would) ensure a more equal distribution of its benefits across generations and
reduce long-term fiscal vulnerabilities from an ageing population and rising heathcare
costs," it says.

Treasurer Wayne Swan has previously dismissed calls from the IMF and the Organisation
for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) to set up a sovereign wealth fund.

"We've got eight million sovereign wealth funds in this country, they're called the
superannuation accounts of Australian workers," Mr Swan said on the issue earlier this
month.

"At the moment the government is intent on lifting our national savings in part by
lifting the savings of low-paid Australians through contribution to their superannuation."

More broadly, the IMF says several economies in the region have room to tighten their
budgets further.

"Fiscal consolidation would also expand fiscal space and increase the scope for governments
to respond effectively to potential future shocks," it says.

Releasing the report in Hong Kong, IMF's director of the Asia & Pacific department
Anoop Singh said economic growth in the region was expected to remain robust this year
and next.

The IMF expects the region to lead the global recovery and grow by close to seven per
cent in both 2011 and 2012.

For Australia, it expects growth to pick up to 3.0 and 3.5 per cent in 2011 and 2012
respectively, from 2.75 per cent in 2010, as demand from emerging economies of Asia for
commodities increases and as private investment in mining emerges as the main driver of
growth.

"Overall, risks to the outlook for Asia are balanced, although new downside risks have
surfaced, such as the unrest in the Middle East and north Africa, as well as uncertainties
about the effects of the tragedy in Japan," he said.

"Also, fiscal and financial vulnerabilities in advanced economies could affect Asia,
mainly through the trade channel."

The report also warns potential overheating pressures are rising, and inflation risks
remain on the upside.

For the region as a whole, consumer price inflation accelerated to about 4.5 per cent
in February 2011, largely due to the rise of fuel and food prices, which are beginning
to feed into core inflation and to "affect the poor".

Australia's own consumer price index (CPI) for the March quarter was released on Wednesday,
after the IMF report was compiled.

It showed the fastest increase in prices in five years, blamed largely on the impact
of this summer's natural disasters on fresh food prices, as well as higher fuel costs.

The CPI rose 1.6 per cent in the quarter, pushing the annual rate above the Reserve
Bank's target band to 3.3 per cent.

But the bigger shock was that measures of underlying inflation also accelerated by
a solid 0.85 per cent on average, raising the risk of an interest rate rise in coming
months.

Vic: Drug ring supergrass fears for life: court

A gangland supergrass alleged to be the head of a drug trafficking syndicate spanning
three continents .. has told a court he fears for his safety.

The supergrass .. who has provided evidence against accused murderer TONY MOKBEL and
corrupt Victorian drug squad detectives .. was extradited to Victoria from the Netherlands
on Boxing Day.

Australian Federal Police allege the 41-year-old man headed a drug syndicate operating
out of Australia .. Canada and the Netherlands .. by conspiring to import cocaine using
a large network of couriers who would swallow parcels of the drug.

The supergrass appeared amid high security at Melbourne Magistrates Court today from
behind a protective shield and was flanked by security personnel.

He told court he fears for his safety and successfully argued his name and image should
be suppressed from media publication.

The supergrass also reportedly taped a conversation with TONY MOKBEL for police.

With only 11 gold medals to be presented today at the Beijing Olympics .. the fewest

it's a distinct case of quality over quantity.

The 200m .. however .. is his favourite event.

It he wins both the 100m and 200m at the Bird's Nest .. he'l be the first Olympic athlete
since CARL LEWIS in 1984 to achieve the feat .. while MICHAEL JOHNSON'S 12-year-old world
record of 19.32 could fall in the process.

The women's 400 hurdles final and hammer throw will also be held today.

FED: Shine aims to decide on gang-rape appeal today

FED: Shine aims to decide on gang-rape appeal today

CANBERRA, Dec 10 AAP - Queensland Attorney-General Kerry Shine says he hopes to make
a decision today about whether to appeal a judge's decision not to jail nine youths who
gang-raped a 10-year-old girl.

Mr Shine met the Director of Public Prosecutions to discuss what he described as a
"lenient" sentence for an "horrific" crime.

Cairns-based District Court judge Sarah Bradley did not record convictions against
six teenagers and gave suspended sentences to the three others over the 2005 gang rape
at the indigenous Arukun community on Cape York.

The girl had "probably agreed" to have sex with the youths, Judge Bradley said during
her sentencing remarks, The Australian newspaper reported today.

The deadline for an appeal had passed although under Queensland law prosecutors could
apply for an extension, the attorney-general said.

"I've asked the Director of Public Prosecutions to give me an advice today on our chances
of success both in relation to the appeal and in terms of applying for an extension of
time," Mr Shine told Southern Cross Broadcasting.

"So I would hope to make a decision later today."

Earlier, Mr Shine said the case had not been brought to his attention until yesterday
nor had there been any communication with his office about an appeal.

"Rape, particularly of a 10-year-old girl, by numerous offenders is to my mind horrific
in the extreme," he said in a statement.

Mr Shine said he understood the victim, now aged 12, is being looked after by foster parents.

There was a Court of Appeal precedent that the courts should not treat indigenous defendants
and victims differently to others, he said.

"In my view, people in the Cape community should be able to rely on the same justice
system as elsewhere in Queensland," Mr Shine said.

NSW: Killers of "little old lady" on south coast lose appeal

Two of three men who tied up an elderly lady and robbed her .. leaving her to die alone
in her NSW south coast home .. have failed in their appeals against their manslaughter
convictions and 18-year jail terms.

JOY ALCHIN's body was found in January 2001 .. 12 days after the men ransacked the
71-year-old's house at Greenwell Point .. and took 23-thousand-300 dollars in cash.

The Court of Criminal Appeal has found 33-year-old PETER DAVID TABER and 44-year-old
IAN CRAIG STYMAN showed a complete lack of remorse for the cruelty inflicted on their
victim.

The two men .. along with STYMAN's nephew SHANNON STYMAN .. slipped into Ms ALCHIN's
house early on January 7 2001 .. tying her up and gagging her before making off with the
cash.

Soon afterwards IAN STYMAN made a triple-0 call from a public phone .. telling police
men with guns had gone into the house .. but the call was regarded as a hoax.

TABER and IAN STYMAN have previously successfully appealed murder convicitons and life
sentences for Ms ALCHIN's death.

Today an attempt to have their 18-year sentences for manslaughter reduced was dismissed.

The court's found if not for the phone call .. the crime would have been in the worst
category of manslaughter.

Both men must serve at least 13 and a half years behind bars .. before becoming eligible
for parole in 2015.

SHANNON STYMAN was also convicted of Ms ALCHIN's manslaughter .. and is serving a 14-year
jail term.

Fed: Mind-altering parasite turns women into sex kittens

An Australian researcher says a common parasite can increase a women's attractiveness
to the opposite sex .. but can also make men more stupid.

About 40 per cent of the world's population is infected with Toxoplasma gondii .. including
about eight million Australians.

Human infection generally occurs when people eat raw or undercooked meat that has cysts
containing the parasite .. or accidentally ingest some of the parasite's eggs excreted
by an infected cat.

The parasite is known to be dangerous to pregnant women .. as it can cause disability
or abortion of the unborn child .. and can also kill people whose immune systems are weakened.

NICKY BOULTER .. an infectious disease researcher at the University of Technology Sydney
.. says until recently it was thought to be an insignificant disease in healthy people.

But new research reveals it has mind-altering properties.

Dr BOULTER says the effect of infection is different between men and women.

He says infected men have lower IQs .. achieve a lower level of education .. and have
shorter attention spans.

They're also more likely to break rules and take risks .. be more independent .. more
anti-social .. and are considered less attractive to women.

On the other hand .. infected women tend to be more outgoing .. friendly .. more promiscuous
.. and are considered more attractive to men.

Dr BOULTER says the research isn't conclusive .. but is backed up by animal studies
that found infection also changes the behaviour of mice.
