IT'S BUYERS WHO SAY NAY AT FASIG.(Local)

Twenty horses went unsold and prices were down 33 percent as the 71st annual Fasig-Tipton thoroughbred yearling auction got off to a dismal start Tuesday.

A chestnut filly went for only $12,000 in the opening hour, setting the tone for the first night.

The filly, purchased by the Berkshire Stud Farm of Dutchess County, was the night's smallest sale.

The top one was a filly that went for for $650,000 to Henryk deKwiatkowski of Poland, and this was predicted to be the biggest of the three-day event. In 1990, considered an lackluster year, the top sale was for $1.5 million.
