Radiation control body in crisis.(News)

THERE are 239 radioactive devices missing in South Africa and more than 400 others are unlicensed, while the body responsible for regulating radiation control says it is so short of staff it is near collapse.

The Directorate of Radiation Control, which regulates about 15 000 radioactive sources and 2 712 licence holders, has only a deputy director and one clerk, instead of the required six staff members.

Only five of the 10 inspectors' posts have been filled, with the result that an alarming 64 percent of inspections of radionuclides have yet to be carried out.
