NSW: Woman in critical condition after head-on smash

SYDNEY, April 13 AAP - A critically injured woman was airlifted to hospital after her
four-wheel drive collided head-on with a truck in Sydney's south-west today.

The 37-year-old woman, from Erskine Park, was driving on Mamre Road at Kemps Creek
when her car collided with the truck, overturned and hit a power pole.

An NRMA CareFlight spokesman said emergency personnel worked for more than an hour
to free the woman from the wreckage after the accident happened about 3pm.

The CareFlight doctor performed emergency roadside surgery on the woman, who suffered
multiple fractures to both arms and legs.

She received a blood transfusion before being flown to Westmead Hospital where she
underwent emergency orthopaedic surgery.

A baby boy in the four-wheel drive suffered minor injuries and was taken by ambulance
to Westmead Children's Hospital.

The truck driver escaped injury.
